Gojek is a technology startup based in Jakarta, Indonesia, that specializes in providing multiple services to its users, while being Indonesia’s fastest-growing unicorn building an on-demand empire. Gojek is a Super App. Yeah, you heard that right, a SUPER APP! It’s one single app for ordering food, commuting, digital payments, shopping, hyper local delivery, getting a massage, and even taking care of your makeup needs. You name it, we got it. Gojek currently has footprints in 5 major Southeast Asian countries, namely Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

For us at Gojek, our ultimate goal is to relate to the users' emotions and reflect the same feeling with motion design. We wanted Gojek to portray a personalized experience for our users' daily needs. We tried introducing gamification, illustrations, heavy-duty GIFs, and animated SVGs, which were good to get started, but the time it took to implement them from scratch simply did not make sense. The additional effort designers had to put in to make sure the developers got the animation right and the load it put on our app’s performance all proved to be too expensive for us.

This is when we stumbled upon Lottie and the Bodymovin plugin. We started experimenting with a tiny heart icon animation for users who wanted to like or dislike a dish in our food delivery product GoFood. Once the animation was implemented, we looked at our data and found that a lot of users had started playing with the animation, and the number of likes on our dishes also started shooting upward. From here on, there was no turning back for us.

Currently, Lottie animations are Super Infused to all our products and services to get the personalized feeling just right for our Super users. What started as a tiny animation has now grown into our very own library of animated characters and a variety of micro animations which are being used across our slew of products.

Gojek’s latest home screen has a Lottie animation in its background that gives out personalized wishes and greetings to our users. Our latest feature release, GoClub (Gojek’s new loyalty program) has been using Lottie animations for almost every page, bringing user interface and motion together to give our users a delightfully warm and personal experience.
