A gear or cog is a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or, in the case of a cogwheel, inserted teeth (called cogs), interlocking with another toothed part to transmit rotational motion or to change the direction of forces. Two or more interlocking gears compose a gear train or, in many cases, a transmission system, which provides a gear ratio that changes the speed, torque, and direction of rotational energy.
