How bigbasket Uses Motion to Make Everyday Shopping More Intuitive

As India’s leading quick commerce platform, bigbasket serves millions of customers with groceries and everyday essentials delivered across the country. With promotions, seasonal campaigns, and new features constantly being introduced, the team faced a simple challenge:

How do you communicate more effectively within the limited space of a mobile screen?

For the design team, the answer was motion.

Rather than treating animation as visual polish, bigbasket uses Lottie animations to guide users, explain features, celebrate milestones, and make everyday interactions feel more intuitive.

Motion that communicates, not decorates

Throughout the app, motion helps customers notice and understand what matters most.

Seasonal campaigns and festivals are one example as India celebrates hundreds of cultural and regional events throughout the year, each with its own shopping behaviors and promotions. Lottie animations allow the team to capture the energy of these occasions in a way static graphics cannot.

Motion also improves everyday experiences. Loading screens showcase the variety of products available on the platform, making waiting feel more engaging. Cashback rewards are accompanied by celebratory animations that reinforce positive moments, while new features such as Shopping List use animation to quickly explain how users can upload a photo of their handwritten list and automatically add items to their cart.

Even new games and interactive experiences receive animated entry points that naturally draw user attention without disrupting the browsing experience.

As Maitreyee Kalaskar, Creative Lead at bigbasket, explains:

"Motion is where design begins to breathe. With LottieFiles, every festival, offer, and moment becomes an experience people can feel and interact with."

From grabbing attention to helping build their basket according to their needs, Lottie animations have helped customers quickly understand deals, discounts, festive campaigns, and shopping experiences tailored for them and their families.

Results have shown a significant increase in click-through rates (CTR) when using Lottie animations for tickers, festive banner confetti, coupons, Free Cash, Free Gifts, and other promotional experiences.

Maitreyee adds:

"We see this as a North Star for our customer's journey. The other jump in CTR we saw came from an A/B test comparing a static game banner with an animated one. We saw a noticeable spike in CTR after the animated banner went live."

Building a smoother motion workflow

As bigbasket expanded its use of Lottie animations across the app, the team looked for ways to make the motion design process faster and easier for both designers and developers.

From the beginning, the team’s philosophy has been to use design and motion to reinforce communication, helping customers quickly understand promotions, discounts, festive campaigns, and other key messages. To support this approach, they focused on building a motion language and workflow that prioritized clarity, consistency, and efficiency.

Bigbasket team in action

One of the biggest improvements came from Lottie Creator, which allows designers to edit Lottie files without always returning to After Effects. Instead of repeating manual export and upload steps, designers can make changes and save directly to the workspace, making it much easier to iterate on animations and experiment with new ideas. What once took repeated back-and-forth now takes around a minute and a half per asset, saving the team roughly five hours each week that can instead be spent on creative work.

The team also uses dotLottie for animations that include PNG sequences or other assets that can increase file size. This has been particularly useful for features like Shopping List, where maintaining visual quality while keeping assets efficient for production is important. In one project, optimizing the animation as a dotLottie file reduced its size from 301 KB to just 99 KB, contributing to better app performance while preserving the intended experience.

Looking ahead

Motion has become an important part of how bigbasket designs and builds product experiences, and the team plans to continue expanding its use in the future.

Looking ahead, they are exploring more of the LottieFiles ecosystem, including data binding, State Machines, AI features, and other capabilities that can help create richer and more personalized user experiences.

The team also sees opportunities to build on existing use cases, such as its Free Cash feature, where personalized motion helps communicate user-specific rewards and create more engaging interactions.

As Mayur, Head of Product at bigbasket, explains:

"Motion should do more than impress—it should inform, guide, and solve. That's where LottieFiles, with its State Machines and data binding capabilities, helps transform animations into meaningful, responsive user experiences."

As these technologies evolve, bigbasket aims to make motion even more dynamic, contextual, and seamlessly integrated into the customer journey.

As Amrit, Senior Motion Designer at bigbasket, puts it:

"LottieFiles and its ecosystem have completely transformed the way UI motion is created. It shifted animation ownership from developers to designers, giving richer experiences, faster iteration, and greater creative control."
